Every summer we would travel from our home in Nottingham, the home of Robin Hood, to stay with my aunt, uncle, and cousins in Devon, home of the Jurassic coastline. The thatched cottage I painted was one typical of those to be found in the area. They were quite commonplace back in the late 50s and 60s. Yorkshire blue slate, the type used to cover roofs had a long way to travel and were far more expensive than that of reed or straw. Creaky uneven floorboards went hand-in-hand with this style of home. It was something that one became accustomed to and you soon learned where to walk to avoid the creaky boards. I am happy to report that more and more people are returning to this style of roofing.
